Comprehensive Weight Loss Program at Valley Aesthetics and Laser-Hacienda Heights and Huntington Beach

Medically Supervised Rapid Weight Loss, Our Approach:
Initial Evaluation for Weight Loss:
• A review of your overall history of Medical, Physical and Mental State.
• Review of all medications, both prescription and non-prescription
• Hormone testing for thyroid and insulin resistance and poly-cystic ovarian disease
• An EKG (electro-cardiogram) and short physical exam to check heart function
and overall health.
Using all the information, Dr. Karan or His Trained Staff will establish a reasonable approach to short-term and long-term weight
loss programs to lose well and keep it off forever.
Lose the weight. Never gain it back again.
We strongly believe that being overweight is a lifestyle problem caused by poor eating habits
and insufficient medical advice. There is no one solution for all patients. Each client is treated as an individual with a customized
weight loss program, after doing fat and lean body mass analysis using Bioimpedence analysis. So no matter if your goal is to lose
weight for cosmetic reasons or if you have health problems due to obesity, we can help you lose the weight and keep it off.
We achieve the goal of our patients by targeting the root cause of obesity:
1) Determination of metabolic requirements and body composition:
This is the only way to find out the real problem and customize the treatment and goal for the patients. By using Bioimpedence
machine (a handheld device) we are able to determine fat and water composition of body, and BMI and LBM.
A) Goal and expectations:
Determination of how much and how soon the goal needs to be achieved
Setting up a short term and long term goal
• Keeping patients involved in his or her own decision making and doing a online management of calories, protein, fat and
carb intake analysis on daily basis.
• Regular follow up
• Education and communication: We provide customized medical and nutritional information to patients so they can make
the right decisions. Everybody is different and needs different approach.
B) Targeting the fat loss:
• Reducing the calorie intake: mild to moderate to severe depending on patient’s goal. The caloric intake can vary from 800-
2000 per day
• Fat intake reduction: Most of us eat plenty of fat—more than the body needs. First thing we encourage is reduction of fat
intake in the range of 20-25% of total allowed calories, as per the patient’s goal. High fat content in the body leads to high
insulin resistance, which leads to more fat accumulation, slowing of metabolism and dysmetabolic syndrome. It becomes difficult
to lose weight, leading to further accumulation of visceral fat which leads to gallbladder stones and fatty liver.
3. Carb intake and carb craving:
The most important part of our weight loss program is to cut carbs and reduce carb craving. If our foods provide more than 50%
of calories from carbs, it can lead to the development of abnormal physiological states in body like hyperinsulinemia and metabolic
syndrome. A landmark scientific study of carb cravers demonstrated that these individuals consume 800 calories on average
more per day than people who do not have this syndrome. Unless you can get this problem under control you will not be able
Cornerstone Wellness Program assists you in watching your calories and amounts of different food components—and where they
are coming from—facilitating the changes gradually through education and a change in eating habits.

4. Mobilizatioin and burning of fat:
The lipolysis and its disposition is done by different
interventions. Increasing the BMR by HCG injection
works via hypo-thalamus, and resets the metabolic
pathway. BMR can also be increased by increasing the
LBM (Lean Body Mass). This is done by increasing the
protein intake with therapeutic protein shakes. Adding
simple exercise and activity can help tremendously.
5. BMR enhancement:
Increased burning of fat can be achieved in several
ways: regular walking or exercise of any kind, 30 minutes
three times a week. Also by adding Cornerstone
Wellness Program protein shakes along with Met-Assist
and omega 3 fatty acids.
6. Lipotropics and Complex Injection:
Lipotropics – (simply means fat burning) are a combination
of B-complex and essential and non-essential
amino acids; some of which are not produced by the
body, or not easily obtained from current food sources.
Methionine: assists in the breakdown of fats and
thereby prevents the build-up of fat in the arteries. It
also assists with the digestive system and removing heavy metals from the body. Since it can be converted to cytosine, which is a
precursor to gluthione, it is of prime importance in detoxifying the liver.
Inositol: helps to maintain proper electrical energy and nutrient transfer across the cell membrane. It also acts as a lipotropic
which converts fats into other useful products. Inositol helps establish healthy cell membranes, which facilitate nerve impulses.
Choline: Choline assists in controlling your weight as well as cholesterol levels, keeping cell membranes healthy, as well as preventing
gallstones. It is also most useful in the maintenance of the nervous system, assisting memory and learning, and may help
to fight infections, including hepatitis and AIDS. Choline is critical for normal membrane structure and function. Choline is the
major precursor of betaine, and it is used by the kidneys to maintain water balance and by the liver as a source of methyl-groups
for methionine formation. It is also used to produce the important neurotransmitter acetylcholine and assists in nerve impulse
transmission, gallbladder regulation, liver functions and lecithin production.
Thiamine: B1 serves as a catalyst in carbohydrate metabolism.
• helps metabolize fats, carbs, and respiratory proteins.
• helps release energy from nutrients. It can reduce cholesterol and prevent and treat
arteriosclerosis, among other benefits.
B5 – Pantothenic Acid: a member of the B-vitamin family, is an essential nutrient in human nutrition. It is sometimes referred to
as vitamin B5. Pantothenic acid is involved in a number of biological reactions, including the production of energy, the catabolism
of fatty acids and amino acids, the synthesis of fatty acids, phospholipids, sphingolipids, cholesterol and steroid hormones, and
the synthesis of heme and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It also appears to be involved in the regulation of gene expression
and in signal transduction. Roger J. Williams, the discoverer of pantothenic acid and a scientist who pioneered the use of nutrients
for the prevention and treatment of disease, thought that pantothenic acid might be helpful in the management of certain medical
disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Pyroxidine - or B6: Pyroxidine is a vital part of the enzyme system and very important to the metabolism of proteins, fats and
carbohydrates. It is also vital to the normal function of the nervous and immune systems. The essential amino acid tryptophan
also depends on pyroxidine for its utilization. Adequate amounts of riboflavin and niacin are required in the diet for pyroxidine to
be used nutritionally.
L-Carnitine: boosts energy by stimulating the body’s burning of tryglycerides as fuel, and sparing the supply of glycogen stored
in the liver for heavier exertion.
During exercise, the body will burn fat at a rate of 75-80% of maximum exertion, thus less glycogen from carbohydrates is burned.
L-carnitine allows the body to burn more fat, save more glycogen, and ultimately boost stamina and endurance. By providing
more fat to the muscles, carnitine makes accessible an otherwise unavailable energy source.
B-12 is a vitamin which is important for the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and for the formation of blood. It
is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell of the body, especially affecting DNA synthesis and regulation, but also fatty
acid synthesis and energy production.
8. Appetite Suppressants:
Medical prescription for short term: phentermine, topamax and metformin,Belviq and Qsymia
9. Behavior Modifications:
One of the most common causes of carb craving is depression/stress/anxiety. Carbs help relieve these by releasing serotonin in
the brain. The effect is short lived, however. And when it wears off you are off to the races (or the cupboard). Vigorous exercise,
has been scientifically proven to raise serotonin as high as the SSRI anti-depressants (Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Paxil etc). So FORCE
yourself to exercise vigorously at least 30 minutes a day and you won’t require that bag of chips. Just make sure you don’t reward
yourself for exercising with unneeded carbs.

How does Cornerstone Wellness work?
Cornerstone Wellness is a medically supervised weight management program available only through physicians. The program offers
a safe and sensible approach to help you gradually lose excess body fat while preserving muscle (lean body mass). You’ll follow
a moderately-reduced calorie plan with healthy, wholesome everyday foods from your grocery store, coupled with delicious,
high-protein meal replacement shakes provided by your physician.
The program also includes clinically proven nutraceutical supplements specifically formulated to stabilize blood sugar levels,
reduce hunger cravings and stimulate fat loss. To get started with Cornerstone Wellness, your physician will perform a simple,
painless diagnostic test using a handheld device to determine your metabolic requirements and body composition. Your test
results, combined with your medical history, will be used to create a customized and flexible diet and exercise program tailored
specifically to your goals and desires.
A Cornerstone Wellness Coach in your physician’s office will review the plan with you and meet with you regularly for support,
feedback and behavioral education. Your coach will periodically re-test your body composition and metabolic rate to help you
track your fat loss and adjust your plan as needed.
How much can I expect to lose?
With a properly managed diet and exercise program most people can expect to lose
1-2 lbs of fat or more per week. Although it is difficult to predict how much weight
you will lose, the goal of Cornerstone Wellness Program is to maximize fat loss and
preserve lean body mass. We work closely with you to make sure the weight you are
losing is, in fact, fat and that you are maintaining optimal health and energy levels
throughout the program.
Will I be hungry?
The Cornerstone Wellness high-protein meal replacement formula and nutritional
supplements are designed to specifically help decrease hunger cravings while maximizing fat loss. Combined with a balanced meal plan, most people find the program
satisfying and easy to follow.
What makes this program different than all the others?
It’s safe, easy and scientifically sound. The Cornerstone Wellness Program is designed and managed by physicians so you can
be confident that you’re doing what’s best for your health and well-being. The program uses state-of-the-art, proven technology to track and monitor your progress and give you useful and motivational feedback.
Measurement, prescription and feedback through advanced technology...
Accurate data is essential to the practice of medicine and this data is gleaned from a marriage of history, examination and the
use of technological tools such as laboratory, imaging and electrodiagnostic (EKG, EEG, EMG) testing. It is a well-known fact
that patients underestimate their caloric intake by 40% and overestimate their caloric expenditure by 40% making patients
weight loss history all but useless. In addition, body weight and BMI are a primitive and inaccurate measurement of the risk
factor of concern ie excess adiposity. It is clear therefore, that to accurately diagnose and treat this disease, physicians must be
able to accurately measure and follow body fat, lean body mass, BMR, calories in and calories out. It is to these ends that Cornerstone
Wellness developed the most accurate, convenient and user-friendly tools to diagnose and treat this deadly disease.
No other wellness/weight loss company has more advanced cutting edge technology than Cornerstone Wellness. From the
most accurate and only Internet driven body composition device to the only FDA cleared calorie tracker to a totally interactive
meal-planning program, calorie mapping and resistance exercise library…Cornerstone Wellness has it all. All these tools allow
physicians to follow patients’ progress more closely, with far more accountability from patients (to their physicians and themselves)
as well as reducing the drudgery and boredom of the weight loss process.
Body Composition Analyzer
• FDA-cleared bioelectrical impedance medical device with documented accuracy of +0.5% on average
• Quick, easy and accurate measurement of body composition (body fat and lean body mass) with results instantly uploaded to Web-base record for physician and patient review.
• Data used to estimate BMR and develop caloric requirements for meal plan.
Web Tools:
The Cornerstone Wellness Website provides a powerful and effective suite of tools for managing your managing your patients’
weight loss efforts. The site interacts directly with the Cornerstone Wellness body composition analyzer offering a clear and
user-friendly visual tool for both patients and physicians.
• Custom meal planning tools makes it easy to create daily meal plans using an 8000 food item USDA data base
• Meal plans provide data on calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, fiber and sugar based on serving size
• Daily calorie consumption goal set at BMR minus 10% of BMR but can be over ridden to physician’s preference
• Tracks and reports macronutrient consumption with alerts according to customized goals set by BMR testing and diet
selection (e.g. Zone, Protein Power, Atkins, Mediteranean, Cornerstone Wellnes, etc.)
• Helps patients monitor the change in their body composition (fat and lean body mass) over time as a result of their diet
and exercise.
• A huge library of resistance movements, to aid in maintenance of muscle. Patient simply clicks on particular muscle
group of a muscular “avatar” and a list of exercises with step-by-step photos and instructions pop-up
• Also includes sporting and ADL activities that determine calories burned per unit time
• A calorie mapping tool where patient enters zip code and finds starting point on street map or satellite map, clicks out a
path to walk, run or bike, enters time elapsed and based on their personal factors it determines calories burned
• Extensive personal journal function to help with goal setting and attainment
• Patients are given username/password to access their data from home
• Physician login provides access to administrative reporting as well as patient records
Body composition Analysis:
The Cornerstone Wellness program utilizes a handheld body composition analyzer (BC IV) to assess patient body composition
and estimate BMR. The BC IV is a Class II FDA-cleared bioelectrical impedance medical device that has a documented accuracy
of+0.5% on average when compared against whole body dual x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Algorithims for men, women and
children have been developed and validated by the USC Department of
Biokinesiology. To take a measurement, patients simply grip the BC IV for
6 seconds and results are instantly uploaded, via the internet, to the Cornerstone
Wellness Website for review by patients and physicians. The test
results, coupled with patient goals, are used to create customized meal
plans. Periodic re-tests can be performed and uploaded to track patient
improvement and make dietary modifications as needed.
Prescription Diet Program:
On this program you will be prescribed an FDA approved appetite suppressant
1. phentermine:
What is phentermine?
Oral phentermine hydrochloride (HCL) is sold for weight loss. It is in the
sympathomimetic family of appetite suppressants (used for the short
term management of exogenous obesity.) When used in conjunction with diet, exercise, and behavior therapy, phentermine may
help you to lose weight while you are learning new ways to eat and to exercise.
How does phentermine work?
Phentermine works by stimulating the hypothalamus gland and affecting certain neurotransmitters to decrease appetite. The
hypothalamus is the region of the brain that controls the autonomic nervous system, regulating sleep cycles, body temperature,
appetite, etc. Phentermine should NOT be used as a substitute for proper diet or exercise. For maximum effects, it must be used
in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and/or exercise. Any modifications in your diet, activity level, and behavior must be
developed and continued long-term in order to continue losing weight and prevent the lost weight from returning.
2. phentermine and Topamax combination:
Phentermine and Topamax combination has been used to help patient lose weight up to 10% of total body weight. Qsymia is a
similar drug combination based on new study showing good result. Doctors on their own has been prescribing them as a combo
for some time for the benefits of patients.
How does Belviq work?
The drug works by controlling appetite — specifically by activating brain receptors for serotonin, a neurotransmitter that triggers feelings of satiety and satisfaction. Serotonin is also involved in mood; many antidepressant drugs work by preventing the
reuptake of serotonin and keeping brain receptors bathed in the chemical. Researchers at Arena say their drug is designed to
seek out only the serotonin receptors that affect appetite.
How effective is it?
According to clinical trial data submitted to the FDA, nearly half of dieters without Type 2 diabetes who used the medication
lost at least 5% of their starting weight — or an average of 12 lbs. — over a year, compared with 23% of those taking a placebo.
For best results, dieters are advised to use the medication together with a healthy diet and exercise program. The approved
labeling for Belviq also recommends that people discontinue the drug if they fail to lose 5% of their body weight after 12 weeks;
longer treatment is unlikely to lead to meaningful weight loss.
Who can take Belviq?
The FDA approved the medication for people who are obese (with a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher) or who are
overweight (with a BMI of 27 or above) and also have at least one weight-related health condition such as Type 2 diabetes, high
blood pressure or high cholesterol.
Are there any side effects?
The most common side effects of Belviq in non-diabetic patients are headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, dry mouth and constipation; in patients with diabetes, side effects include low blood sugar, headache, back pain, cough and fatigue.
3. Xenical:
This medicine blocks fat absorption in gut and thus allows fat to be excreted with stool. It is also sold over the counter as Alli.
Patients in trials who took Qsymia and made lifestyle changes lost an average of about 10% of their body weight after one year
on the drug, compared to a 2% weight loss in people who took placebo pills. Qsymia, developed by California-based Vivus Inc.,
combines two already prescribed medications -- the stimulant phentermine and the anti-seizure drug Topamax (topiramate) -- in
a controlled-release pill that is taken once a day. Although this loss is considered modest, it was still about twice as much as was
reported in trials of Belviq and some other weight loss drugs.
Side effects included constipation, dry mouth, and tingling in the fingers and toes, but there was no evidence of an increase in
heart disease or stroke risk associated with the drug’s use. People with diabetes or those at high risk for developing diabetes
may benefit most from taking the drug. In the company-sponsored studies, these patients showed improvements in blood sugar
control, along with weight loss.
Other medications, or a natural appetite suppressant may be suggested to help curb your appetite and help you feel satisfied
more quickly. Our Medical Director, Dr. Pankaj Karan, will work with you one-on-one to determine appropriate dosage, as well
as help you learn how to eat nutritiously balanced meals to help you burn fat. And as with all of our programs, you will also
receive one-on-one comprehensive lifestyle education as well as exercise and counseling to help you lose the weight, and most
importantly keep it off.
Carb Craving:
A landmark scientific study of carb cravers demonstrated that these individuals consume 800 calories on average more per day
than people who do not have this syndrome. Unless you can get this problem under control you will not be able to lose significant amounts of fat. EATING FAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU FAT. EATING EXCESSIVE CARBS MAKES YOU FAT.
Here are a few strategies that have been shown to help:
One of the most common causes of carb craving is depression/stress/anxiety. Carbs help relieve these by releasing serotonin in
the brain. The effect is short-lived however. And when it wears off, you are off to the races (or the cupboard).
Just make sure you don’t
reward yourself for exercising with it.
Eat a high protein breakfast and lunch (or substitute with an all-natural high protein shake like the Cornerstone Meal Replacement)
and high protein snacks. This will lower your insulin levels and stabilize your blood sugar, which will help immensely
with carb craving. This will also help maintain muscle, which will keep you burning more calories.
Prepare ahead with crunchy low calorie and slightly salty snacks. At home and work, keep cut up raw vegetables such as celery,
carrots, snap peas, peppers, jicama etc in a lidded container of slightly salty water in the fridge. The crunch and the saltiness will
satisfy the need at a fraction of the calories and insulin response.
Keep cold club soda or sparkling water at home and work with limes or lemons that you cut and throw in. The gas will fill you
up so you will feel full and there are 0 calories. Try not to drink diet sodas as the artificial sweeteners have been shown to make
people seek out carbs and sweets. It has been shown that 27% of calories in America comes from beverages, higher in the South
where sweet tea is one of the 4 food groups. If a 180 lb woman drank club soda instead, and changed nothing else she would
lose more than 50 lbs in a year.
When you eat out always tell the server to skip the bread. Yes, it’s free. But I guarantee you will never not empty the basket.
Also, sub vegetables for the potato. The healthier part of a loaded potato is actually the sour cream and bacon.
If you are a tortilla eater, remember a tortilla has as many carbs and calories as a slice of bread. The average Mexican American
eats 12- 15 tortillas a day. Flour or corn, it makes no difference. Remember, corn is a starch not a vegetable. How does a rancher
fatten a cow? By feeding it corn.
When you go grocery shopping, don’t buy chips, crackers, cereals and other flour and starch based foods. If they are not in the
house you will not eat them. Don’t worry about the kids. Remember your kids have half your DNA—if you’re overweight, they
will likely be overweight, especially if they’re eating what you’ve been bringing home to feed your own carb addiction. Things
are hard enough for kids today. Don’t sabotage your their success in life by contributing to their obesity. If you are not willing
to do it for yourself, at least do it for your kids. Be a role model for healthy eating. Besides, they’ll find enough junk food at the
neighbor’s. And the pesky neighbor kids won’t come over because you don’t have anything they want to eat. Voila!
Met Assist
So far we addressed dietary changes to cure carb craving such as eating more protein, eating more frequently and decreasing
intake of white foods (sugar, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta). There is a supplement called Met Assist which I formulated, which will
help not only with blood sugar stabilization but also help you lose excess body fat. In Met Assist there are 4 major and 4 minor
nutraceuticals that work synergistically to normalize and prevent swings in blood sugar, lower hemoglobin A1C in diabetics,
improve mood, directly curb desire for sweets and actually decrease body fat levels when taken regularly. These nutraceuticals
are as follows:
Hydroxycitric Acid or HCA – This naturally occurring substance is derived from a tropical fruit garcinia cambogia, also known
as tamarind. In multiple scientific studies HCA has been shown to:
• decrease conversion in the liver of sugar and starch to fatty acids
• decrease absorption of sugar from the gut so more sugar is simply excreted from the body
• lowers sugar and insulin levels, triglycerides and inflammation in the body as shown by lowering C reactive protein and
interleukin 6 which are blood markers of inflammation
• increases serotonin, the “feel good” chemical in your brain which lowers appetite directly as well as indirectly by decreasing
stress and depression which are major triggers for excess eating particularly starchy foods
• lower body weight by BMI by 6% in 12 weeks
Chromium Polynicotinate – This is a compound which consists of the metallic element attached to the B vitamin niacin. This
compound is also known as glucose tolerance factor (GTF) as it is the link that attaches the insulin receptors to the cell membrane
as also keeps the insulin receptors active. When insulin receptors become inactive due to chronic overeating of white foods
this is what causes type 2 or adult onset diabetes. In fact, chromium polynicotinate has been shown in many human studies
to lower hemoglobin A1C (HgB A1C) by 0.6 in diabetics. Diabetes is defined in laboratory studies as an elevated HgBA1C of
greater than 6 so basically this can decrease it by 10% which is quite significant.
Gymnema Sylvestrie – Used for 2,000 years in Aryuvedic medicine to prevent and treat diabetes, the Hindu word for this amazing herb is
“gumar” which literally means “sugar destroyer”. This herb is being actively studied by scientists as it holds great promise in not only treating
and preventing diabetes but as well inth earea of weight loss and general weight loss. Studies have shown that gymnema:
• reduces the sweetness of sugar thereby inhibiting sweet cravings
• reduces the absorption of both sugar and fat causing these to be excreted from the body
• stimulates insulin to be secreted from the pancreas by regenerating pancreatic cells
• is anti-diabetic in laboratory rats
Green Tea - Green tea has been the subject of thousands of medical studies particularly over recent years. As green tea relates to the subject
at hand it has been shown to:
• increase the burning of fat by the body by 17%
• cause a 4% weight loss in 12 months
• decrease both systolic and diastolic blood pressure which are often elevated in overweight individuals
• decrease total and LDL cholesterol
• reduce deaths due to heart disease the most common cause of death particularly in the overweight
Fenugreek Seeds – Have been used medicinally throughout the world for thousands of years. It has many health benefits from increasing
milk production in nursing mothers to increasing libido 25% in aging men but as it relates to weight loss, carb craving and diabetes fenugreek:
• is anti-diabetic and ameliorates most metabolic effects of Type 2 diabete
• improves glucose tolerance
• lowers cholesterol levels 14% in 24 weeks
Ginger Root- Another ancient herb with myriad uses in health and wellness which has been shown to:
• lower blood pressure in laboratory animals
• lower blood sugar in laboratory animals
• lower cholesterol in laboratory animals
Taking 1-2 tablets of Met Assist 3 times a day before each meal will result in a noticeable reduction in sugar craving, hunger, insulin overshoot
symptoms and will be a very useful addition to your fat loss and wellness regimen.
OMEGA-3 fatty Acids:
Most people have heard of omega 3 oils and that they should consume them. But very few people really understand what they are, and why
they are important.
There are 2 dietary fats which are essential., that is, required for human life- omega 6 and omega 3. Omega 6 comes primarily from seeds or
grains such as wheat, corn, rice, and the food stuffs made from these grains like bread, pasta, beer and most of the oils we use to cook with
such as corn and vegetable oil. Once we consume omega 6 oils they become a huge part of our cell membranes and also create substances that
support the inflammatory response, for example, to infection or cancer or injury.
Omega 3 oils are made by one-celled organisms in the ocean called plankton and are also found in green leafy vegetables. Since fish, particularly cold-water fish, eat plankton and algae they are a great source of omega 3. These oils also become part of our cell membranes, particularly in our brains, eyes and heart but they do the opposite of omega 6 with regards to inflammation- they actually fight inflammation. So the
higher the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 that you consume, the more at risk you are for developing inflammatory diseases such as heart disease,
arthritic diseases, auto immune diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma and COPD.
One of the reasons these types of diseases are so common in industrialized countries is because of the unhealthy high consumption of grainbased
foods (breads, rice pasta etc.) with a too low consumption of omega 3 from wild caught fish, grass fed beef and green leafy vegetables.
Since almost all the flesh we eat from cows, pigs and chickens is raised on corn, which is an omega 6 based feed, we get it coming and going.
Even most of the fish we eat is “farm raised” which means they are fed corn based fish chow and not therefore getting the omega 3 containing
food of algae and plankton that wild fish would eat. So one can see how just about everywhere we turn in a modern American supermarket we
are looking at high omega 6 foods- cereals, snack foods, breads, farm raised beef and fish etc., with very few, if any high omega 3 foods.
In addition to all the health benefits of increasing omega 3 and decreasing omega 6 in the diet, it helps with weight loss! Review of the current
scientific research indicates that omega 3 supplementation results in:
• improvement in fat loss in obese individuals
• an increase in muscle mass in obese individuals
• a decrease in inflammatory substances in the blood that are created by excess fat cells
• improvement in all the components of metabolic syndrome (hypertension, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol and insulin
resistance) which is the major cause of diabetes, heart disease and premature death in the US and other developed countries
In addition to the very direct effects noted above there are several other secondary effects that support weight loss such as the positive effects
of omega3 supplementation on mood and response to stress which of course might lead to less “stress eating” one of the major behavior patterns
linked to obesity.
Lowering one’s intake of omega 6 oils and foods will improve the ratio of omega 6 (pro-inflammatory) to omega 3 (anti-inflammatory) in the
body and will result in even more impressive health benefits. Also since all the high omega 6 foods are grain based white foods i.e. breads,
rice, pastas, beer, cereal, by decreasing consumption of these high glycemic foods one will see lower insulin levels and therefore less fat storage,
since insulin drives fat storage.
So what is the best way to increase omega 3 intake? There are two ways. The first is to increase high omega 3 containing foods such as coldwater fatty fish (salmon, halibut, sardines) and to some extent leafy green vegetables. However, because of the pollution in the oceans these
fish store dangerous toxins like heavy metals such as mercury, dioxins, PCBs etc. So eating more fatty fish results in more dangerous toxins
being ingested. The other way to increases omega 3 is by taking a super high- potency, ultra purified omega 3 supplement daily. It is also more
convenient and much less expensive than eating fish every day.
